Research Assignment 1

 Lee Friedlander

Lee Friedlander is "known for his asymmetrical black-and-white pictures of the American “social landscape”" (Britannica) To put it in my words, he likes capturing the everyday life of individuals, of places. Though his photography career has spanned many decades, he only produces black and white pictures, usually centered to a little off-center. His motivation seems to be life. He finds character in everything he sees, whether people or buildings. His wife has always been a main source of inspiration.

Vivian Maier

Vivian Maier was very interested in what no one else was paying attention to, like people living in poverty, children and the elderly. Her style was "black-and-white documentary" (Britannica). She mostly did portraits, at times even self-portraits. Her motivation seemed to be the invisible, the marginalized. Her pictures are usually centered to a little off-center.
